The aim of this paper is to analyze the socio-environmental sustainability levels of companies included in the Corporate Sustainability Index [ISE] and their alignment with the ESG scores used by Credit Rating Agencies [CRAs] in credit risk assessments.
This research is motivated by the limited number of studies investigating whether companies included in the ISE exhibit consistent alignment with the ESG scores assigned by CRAs.
The study employs Multiple Correspondence Analysis [MCA] to identify patterns and relationships between the ESG indicators adopted by CRAs and the sustainability levels reflected in the ISE.
The results reveal more divergences than convergences between the sustainability levels of ISE companies and the ESG scores assigned by CRAs.
The MCA perceptual map makes it possible to identify patterns of convergence and divergence between the sustainability levels of ISE companies and the ESG assessment standards adopted by CRAs.
By comparing the ISE, a national index, with the ESG assessment standards employed by CRAs at the international level, this study provides evidence regarding the degree of alignment between ESG criteria and highlights potential inconsistencies in the information provided to market.
