The objective of this study is to synthesize the available evidence in the literature on financial inclusion and the use of digital financial services (DFS), identifying thematic, methodological, and theoretical trends related to the associated risks.
DFS plays a central role in financial inclusion across several countries worldwide, including the Global North and South. This process faces challenges, such as the difference between use, access, and inclusion related to population characteristics.
A Scoping Review was adopted, based on [KNOWN] Tricco et al. (2018) guidelines. Searches were conducted in the Web of Science, Scopus, Scielo, and Spell databases. Thirty articles published in journals classified by the ABS were analyzed.
Identification of concepts and theories on the subject. Financial inclusion enabled by DFS has benefits and challenges. Inclusion presents asymmetry in vulnerable groups. The digital environment can favor impulsive behavior, leading to overconsumption and indebtedness.
It is necessary to deepen research relating DFS, financial literacy, self-control, and their impacts on financial well-being. Technology adoption theories may not be sufficient to evaluate the adoption and effective use of DFS.
Measures must be adopted to reduce the impact on financial well-being, foreseeing specific actions for the inclusion of vulnerable groups, such as interventions based on self-control and nudges.
