Study goals
The main objective of this article is to highlight the impacts of IFRS 16 - Leases and their implications for accounting for commercial leases in companies.
Relevance / originality
As of January 1, 2019, IFRS 16 came into effect in Brazil, causing companies to change the way of accounting for leasing / rent.
Methodology / approach
Through a bibliographic and descriptive research, with a quantitative approach, based on the accounting reports of Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes SA, from the 1st semester of 2019 and from the year 2018, we tried to analyze the variations in the assets, liabilities and results of this company .
Main results
It is noted in the accounts referring to the Fixed Assets a variation of 107%, due to the accounting of the lease contracts, as well as it became necessary also the measurement of the amounts payable referring to these assets, occurring then a significant variation in the Liabilities.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
The article shows in a practical way the new way of disclosing commercial leases in the companies' financial statements.
Social / management contributions
The new way in which contracts will be registered will be essential for a more critical and transparent look at the company's health. Accounting will provide more real data than the company has actually leased, and can analyze whether it is doing well financially or not.
