The objective of this theoretical essay is to identify and categorize the main barriers to the adoption of Industry 4.0, proposing a grouping of these barriers that can guide strategies to overcome challenges and facilitate digital transformation in industries.

Methodology / approach
A comprehensive literature review was conducted using the Web of Science and Scopus databases, followed by a qualitative analysis of the selected studies. The methodological approach enabled the identification, conceptualization, and grouping of barriers into four categories: strategic, technological, human, and financial/regulatory.
Main results
The study found that human and technological barriers are the most prevalent and interdependent, requiring an integrated approach to overcome them. The lack of adequate technological infrastructure and the skills gap among employees were highlighted as the main obstacles.
