Study goals
To analyze the impact of online betting behavior on Brazilian household consumption, addressing triggers, personal/social effects, indebtedness, and its relation to SDGs 8, 10, and 16, considering the history of online betting in Brazil.
Relevance / originality
The rapid expansion of online betting platforms in Brazil and the increasing number of bettors, especially among youth and low-income classes, raise concerns regarding impacts on consumption, indebtedness, and mental health, justifying the urgency of this study.
Methodology / approach
This study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining a thorough bibliographic review with a descriptive quantitative empirical study. An online survey will be conducted, aiming to collect data from 200 to 300 online bettors residing in Brazil for statistical analysis.
Main results
The study expects to identify a vicious pattern in bettors' behavior, leading to activity neglect and addiction. Findings should reveal increased indebtedness, negative impacts on retail consumption, and a rise in mental health issues, exacerbating social inequalities.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
To propose the use of a validated psychometric scale and one developed by the authors for bettors' self-assessment, contributing instruments to identify the profile and behavior of online betting consumers in Brazil, applying cluster analysis and statistical tests.
Social / management contributions
Content generated: To provide data to support more effective public policies and regulations for the betting sector, mitigate negative impacts like indebtedness and ludopathy, and raise awareness about risks, promoting social well-being and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.
