To understand how the theoretical traditions mobilized in the literature explain the development of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) in socioenvironmental impact businesses, identifying the mechanisms and conditions each tradition attributes to this development.
The literature linking EO and impact businesses is fragmented; the construct was consolidated around conventional firms, and an integrated synthesis of its development in hybrid contexts is still lacking, combining theoretical, practical, and methodological relevance.
A systematic literature review conducted following the SPAR-4-SLR protocol, using the TCM framework (Theories, Contexts, Methods), in the Web of Science and Scopus databases, qualitatively analyzing 49 eligible articles published between 2016 and 2025.
Five theoretical traditions were identified (one split into two subtraditions), explaining distinct and complementary aspects of EO: what, how, who, where, and toward what, without integration among them; adjectivized variants of the classic construct predominate.
The study proposes that EO, in impact businesses, reorganizes around a cooperative-axiological axis rather than the competitive-economic one; the synthesis by traditions offers an integrative framework and a future research agenda.
For managers, classic instruments may underestimate legitimate relational and value-based dimensions; for support programs, findings indicate the need to foster reconfiguration capabilities and cross-sector partnerships that mediate performance.
