To map the complementarities between CPMAI and BABOK® Guide v3, proposing an integrative model (CPMAI-BA) that operationalizes the Business Understanding phase of AI projects through established business analysis techniques.
CPMAI offers limited operational guidance in its Phase I and no prior studies were found explicitly articulating CPMAI and Guia BABOK® to address this gap.
Qualitative, exploratory, document-based comparative research grounded in the official CPMAI (PMI, 2025) and BABOK® v3 (IIBA, 2015) guides. The analysis mapped complementarities between CPMAI's Phase I and four BABOK® Guide knowledge areas.
The study proposes the CPMAI-BA framework, structured in four dimensions: Human Discovery and Alignment, Strategy and Risk, Solution Engineering and Design, and Governance and Product, which operationalize CPMAI's Phase I through tasks and techniques from four BABOK® Guide knowledge areas.
The study strengthens the still-incipient literature on business understanding in AI projects by bridging an institutionally established technical framework (CPMAI) with an academically mature business analysis discipline (BABOK® Guide), without claiming to exhaust other possible responses to the problem.
Offers professionals and organizations a practical mapping of BABOK® Guide techniques applicable to CPMAI's Phase I, with the potential to reduce the risk of AI projects failing due to avoidable business alignment and planning issues.
