The study aimed to understand the influence of the front-of-package nutritional labeling adopted by Anvisa on the purchasing behavior of Generation Z consumers, examining whether this mechanism fulfills its informational function and contributes to healthier food choices.
Given the growing global adoption of front-of-package labeling, it becomes relevant to investigate its influence on the purchasing decisions of Generation Z consumers in Brazil, a population that remains underexplored in national research and that exhibits distinctive behavioral characteristics.
To this end, a conclusive descriptive study was conducted in two stages: a qualitative stage, comprising thirteen in-depth interviews, and a quantitative stage, conducted through an online questionnaire with 202 responses. The data were analyzed using content analysis and descriptive statistics.
The findings indicate that front-of-package labeling encourages reflection and fosters awareness regarding the presence of critical nutrients; however, its capacity to change purchasing decisions is contingent upon the purchase context, the product category, and the buyer's individual motivations.
As a methodological contribution, the study demonstrates that front-of-package labeling contributes to more conscious food choices, exerting a greater influence when it challenges a favorable perception of the product, while producing a comparatively limited effect on already established habits and purchasing decisions.
As a social and managerial contribution, the findings demonstrate that front-of-package labeling alone is insufficient to change eating habits. Therefore, public authorities and private companies should implement complementary measures to encourage healthier choices and reduce diet-related chronic diseases.
