Methodology / approach
This study performed a systematic literature review, selecting 36 articles from the Scopus database.
Main results
The main results of this study are in the identification and discussion of the four main urban stakeholders found in the literature, which are: (1) governments, (2) industry, (3) citizens, and (4) civil society.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
This work contributes to stakeholder theory and urban studies, as it maps urban stakeholders and discusses in detail how the four types with the highest occurrence in the literature are definitely stakeholders under the construct of stakeholder (Freeman, 1984).
Social / management contributions
For practitioners, such as public managers of municipalities and urban planners, this work contributes by synthesizing how the literature has shown the way in which such stakeholders are affected by or affect urban management.
