Study goals
This research, conducted through a systematic literature review (RSL), aims to investigate the influence of the project manager on project performance, from their personal characteristics and influence on the team.
Relevance / originality
Research indicates that the personal characteristics of project managers, such as leadership, emotional intelligence, conflict management, influencing people, verbal and written skills, directly affect project outcomes. Explaining that project manager competencies are directly related to project success.
Methodology / approach
Searches were performed in the SCOPUS database, according to keywords: Leadership, Manager, Performance and Project Success, considering articles from Business, Management and Accounting, and only journals from Project Management, also consisting of application of filters and individual analysis of each article.
Main results
A total of 243 articles were identified, and after preliminary analysis by reading the abstracts, 21 articles were selected that corresponded to the research theme and were used for the construction of this study.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
The contribution to theory is the understanding of the project manager's impact on project performance, which demonstrates that the project manager's personal characteristics directly affect the project outcome, and the practical contribution is oriented towards attention to what attributes the project manager must have for better project performance.
Social / management contributions
Considering the research gap where high-level theory does not portray the influence of middle managers on the success of projects. This study, through a systematic literature review, showed that the personal characteristics of project managers, such as leadership, emotional intelligence, conflict management, influence on people, and verbal and written skills, in the role of intermediate managers directly influence the result of the projects.
