Study goals
The objective of the work is to analyze in the recently published literature the ways in which education for sustainability has been approached in the daily teaching-learning of basic education institutions, mainly in elementary education.
Relevance / originality
The theme is current, since the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) established in 2000 goals that should be met by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015, such as: ending hunger and misery, spread quality basic education to all, among 6 other objectives that have not been fully achieved. This global agenda is very important for countries, especially developing countries, in the quest to improve people's quality of life. These 15 years of MDG also revealed a series of new social issues that needed more attention. For this reason, in 2015, the UNDP developed new objectives and goals, called SDGs, with a goal by 2030, among which, objective 4, the search for quality education, is central to human training, but little has been investigated in any way. how to seek the improvement of teaching with innovative teaching-learning strategies.
Methodology / approach
The literature review was carried out following the ideas proposed by Bento (2012), which indicates four essential steps for conducting a literature review: i) identification of keywords; ii) analysis of secondary sources; iii) collection of primary sources; and iv) critical reading of the selected material.
Main results
The results showed that there are gaps in the way EPS is being treated in the context of the elementary school classroom despite its importance in the current situation on the planet. For this reason, it is necessary to make a greater commitment from primary education institutions, through innovative teaching strategies, towards a sustainable future.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
The systematization of literature that has dealt with the theme education for sustainability in elementary school, but above all the demonstration of gaps on how to work with this theme in the current period, opening up a flank of possibility for new studies and didactic models that dynamize and contribute to the diffusion of quality education that puts people and the world on a sustainable path, through bold and transformative measures.
Social / management contributions
The literature study is already contributing to the search for an inclusive and equitable quality education, and to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. The promotion of universal access to primary education is a reality in almost everyone, but the dissemination of measures and strategies that improve this quality of education, inclusion based on the principles of human rights and sustainability, is lacking. For this reason, the study aims to contribute, above all with the promotion of training and empowerment of individuals with the aim of expanding the opportunities of the most vulnerable people in the path of serene and convivial development.
