Study goals
Assuming that water scarcity and contamination deepen situations of extreme poverty, this article aims to assess the current situation of availability and management of water and sanitation in Brazil, in order to ascertain whether the growing income inequality and the social polarization, reinforced by neoliberal policies and social tensions associated with uncertainties, threaten the economic and social sustainability provided for in the development model proposed by Agenda 2030.
Relevance / originality
The 2030 Agenda, through its seventeen sustainable development objectives (SDGs) and its 169 goals, advocates a balance between economic growth, social inclusion and protection of the environment. In this context, sustainable development requires the eradication of poverty in all its forms and dimensions, the promotion of shared prosperity and the integrated and sustainable management of natural resources and ecosystems. The theme is relevant and an analysis of perspectives is opportune, in terms of public policy for Brazil.
Methodology / approach
The approach will be carried out through an inductive methodology, based on basic strategic investigations, of a descriptive nature, supported by bibliographical and documentary research.
Main results
Through the analysis of indicators and facts, the work concludes how incipient the basic sanitation police is in Brazil, being extremely unlikely that the goals established by Agenda 2030 will be realized.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
The article combines social issues, such as vulnerability, with the basic sanitation policy, seeking to show that the management of natural resources must be centered on people.
Social / management contributions
As a contribution to the theme, alternative proposals to the policies that have been practiced in relation to the access to water and sanitation, aiming to guarantee the progressive improvement of the quality of life conditions, in order to ensure Brazil a sustainable future, through the institutionalization of a development centered on people and sensitive to the environment.
