Study goals
The main goal is demonstrate the potential of using a Geographic Information System - GIS as a tool to support decision making through the use of open source software. The project developed a methodology to create a geo-referencing map based on information from existing maps on the web, as well as the consolidation of data related to traffic accidents contained in Traffic Accident Reporting Bulletins - B.O. Developed the methodology of obtaining maps and constructed the platform for obtaining data from accidents reports, georeferenced maps of accidentality were generated. The analysis of the data allows the manager to visually identify the major accident spots, times and days of the week, and characteristics of the drivers such as gender, age, schooling, license driver time etc.
Relevance / originality
Work shows how to obtain spatial maps and databases using free software and computing techniques that are easy to use by servers and / or contractors from public agencies.
Methodology / approach
As a method for obtaining the urban roads of a given city from digital maps available on the internet, a search was made of the data with remote information providers that were available in GIS programs
Main results
Possibility of city hall and government agencies to develop, using free software, a spatial analysis tool that enables decision making based on data collected from their areas of influence.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
The method makes it possible to quickly obtain digital maps at reduced costs, develops an approach based on free software that can be customized by administrations.
Social / management contributions
The project can be scalable once the maps are ready and the databases are structured. You can paritr of traffic accidents and easily migrate to the health area, mapping diseases, for example, you can develop modules for garbage collection, distribution of students by school etc.
