To conduct a bibliometric analysis of scientific literature on fan engagement, aiming to identify key trends, the most influential authors and journals, bibliographic coupling networks, and the thematic axes structuring this research field.
This is the first study to map the field of fan engagement using a bibliometric and cross-sectional approach, filling a gap not covered by previous reviews limited to specific subfields.
A total of 1,103 articles were retrieved from Scopus and subjected to author productivity analysis and bibliographic coupling analysis using Bibexcel and Ucinet/Netdraw. An Exploratory Factor Analysis (PCA/SPSS) organized 48 core articles into six factors, which were characterized through qualitative analysis.
It revealed six thematic sub-areas of fan engagement: the broad sports and media landscape; Asian media fandom as civic-political activism; institutional case studies; social media engagement from a marketing perspective; institutional listening dynamics; and blockchain technology applied to sports governance.
The study consolidates—using objective bibliometric evidence—an intellectual structure of the literature that was previously fragmented, offering researchers a structured map of the field's six sub-areas to help situate new investigations and avoid the unintentional duplication of future research efforts.
Brand and sports club managers can fine-tune their social media content strategies based on "Factor 4": organizations evaluating fan tokens gain insights into democratized engagement and regulatory risks. Public institutions can enhance their two-way communication models.
