Main results
Therefore, it is essential to build reciprocal relationships with public agencies and the local indigenous population, aiming at a commitment to a sustainable future. In this way, people's awareness through simple practices, such as composting and recycling, as well as through environmental education in a continuous process, emerges as solutions for the building of sustainable indigenous communities and less waste generator.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
It is known that the indigenous community has a strong relationship with the environment, and it is through the environment in which they live that they take their livelihood, cultivating the land and, thus, also their traditions, in order to maintain their customs, their inheritances , for future generations. For this reason, the study contributes with important data and information for the maintenance of indigenous styles and values that are more focused on the sustainability of the environment and that people living in indigenous communities are maintained due to styles and values external to the community.
Social / management contributions
The results achieved showed the need to plan new and more concrete actions by the indigenous peoples and public bodies in order to have a prosperity with less risks and dangers of solid waste generated internally in the community. This requires new lifestyles, attitudes and values more geared towards local socio-environmental awareness of the conservation of natural resources and less waste generation, thus ensuring the sustainability of the Catu indigenous community, located in Rio Grande do Norte.
