Study goals
Analyze the contribution of intuition to the decision-making process by the directors of Military Organizations headed by Intending Officers, given that managers, in the current and turbulent context, have to resort to processes other than analysis tools, graphs, spreadsheets and calculations for decision making.
Relevance / originality
Managers, including the military, started to decide in an atmosphere where there are countless variables, a high level of uncertainty, high risk and an increasing need to act quickly to seize opportunities and, consequently, avoid potential threats and losses. In the context of Military Organizations led by officers of the Corps of Directors, the scarcity of budgetary resources is an urgent challenge, which requires managers to make quick and correct decisions, often not described in publications or standards.
Methodology / approach
This study is characterized as exploratory, since it aims to understand a given phenomenon, the use of intuition in decision-making processes. As a main data collection technique, a script for interviews was used.
The interviews were carried out with Officers in charge of leadership or who have already directed Military Organizations that have the purpose of contributing to the readiness of naval, aircraft and marine marines. The selection of respondents was made for convenience, based on the researcher's judgment.
Main results
The results obtained indicate intuition as essential for the decision-making process, which is frequently used by officers in charge of management. In addition, it is concluded that intuition is the result of refinement of the military's personal and professional experiences, and that it should be used in addition to the rational decision-making process, because differently from what some believe, it is not contrary to reason.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
Advance research related to decision-making processes in public organizations.
Social / management contributions
Managers started to decide in an atmosphere where there are countless variables, a high level of uncertainty, high risk and a growing need to act quickly to seize opportunities and, consequently, avoid potential threats and losses. Thus, it is essential to study intuition in Military Organizations. For, the Directors adopt decisions in an increasingly dynamic and complex environment, and under strong time and organizational pressures.
