Study goals
Propose an environmental audit methodology for the collection of solid waste in Military Organizations of the Brazilian Navy and possible improvements to the process.
Relevance / originality
The adoption of environmental criteria in the administrative and operational activities of the public administration constitutes a process of continuous improvement that consists of adapting the environmental effects of the government's conduct to the policy of preventing negative impacts on the environment.
Methodology / approach
A case study was carried out at the Navy Supply Directorate, adopting bibliographic and documentary research as investigation procedures, as well as the application of a check-list based on on-site visits for observation, registration and information collection.
Main results
It was observed that the Board develops several environmentally appropriate practices for the correct management of its solid waste, however it does not have a structured Solid Waste Management Plan, nor does it disclose its actions.
Based on the above and based on the results obtained with the analysis of the application of environmental auditing by the Navy Supply Directorate, it is concluded that, despite the non-mandatory nature, the implementation of this practice by Military Organizations should be encouraged.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
From a theoretical point of view, the development of tools for the analysis of environmental issues is still incipient in the literature.
Social / management contributions
Contribute to empirical studies in Public Organizations.
