Study goals
To deepen the understanding of the main use cases of blockchain in the financial sector, beyond cryptocurrencies, and to investigate if there are evaluations of the tangible performance or impact of its adoption.
Relevance / originality
Blockchain is a promising technology, but its real impact is poorly understood. The relevance is to deepen the understanding of its uses, and the originality lies in focusing on applications beyond cryptocurrencies and on the gap regarding performance and impact.
Methodology / approach
A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted with a search on the Web of Science database. VOSviewer was used for the bibliometric analysis of the main topics. The PRISMA framework was applied to organize the articles and the filters.
Main results
The analysis identified three clusters of related themes and use cases focused on efficiency, transparency, and forms of financing. The main result is the gap in the literature: the studies do not quantitatively measure the performance or impact of the technology's adoption.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
The main theoretical contribution is to highlight the gap in performance and impact measurement within projects that used blockchain, indicating that there is a field for future research.
Social / management contributions
For managers, it warns that the decision to undertake blockchain adoption projects requires structured analysis and a long-term vision.
