Study goals
The Organizational Knowledge Observation Form (FOCO, from the Portuguese Formulário de Observação do Conhecimento Organizacional) is a methodological instrument designed for data collection and analysis of organizational knowledge creation and conversion processes, grounded in the Theory of Organizational Knowledge Creation (TOKC).
Relevance / originality
Its main relevance lies in transforming organizational knowledge observation into a structured, accessible, and strategic practice, bridging theory and practice through a digital form with language adapted for autonomous use by professionals from diverse backgrounds.
Methodology / approach
Developed through an exploratory-descriptive study, under a qualitative approach and constructivist-pragmatic epistemology, it results from theoretical construction and practical application of concepts integrating the SECI Model, the Five Phases of Knowledge Creation, and the Concepts of Ba, Knowledge Activists, and Situational Leadership.
Main results
FOCO enabled the analysis of how scientific knowledge is converted into innovation through the lens of TOKC. It facilitated the identification of tools and the understanding of practices employed by leaders and managers within a research institute of a Brazilian federal university.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
The tool operationalizes complex theoretical concepts, enables the analysis of real innovation practices, and is adaptable to various organizational contexts, allowing the mapping of tacit knowledge and the identification of how organizations create and transform knowledge into solutions.
Social / management contributions
FOCO fosters knowledge management by making visible the practices and processes that convert knowledge into innovation. It supports strategic decision-making, strengthens organizational culture, and contributes to valuing knowledge as a social and institutional asset.
