Study goals
The objective of the study was to analyze how frugal innovation and entrepreneurship at the base of the pyramid (BoP) have been addressed in the academic literature, seeking to understand the main aspects and trends of this theme.
Relevance / originality
The research addresses a new field where frugal innovation and entrepreneurship in the BoP receive little attention, despite the growing evolution of BoP-related approaches, from consumer to producer and supplier.
Methodology / approach
Este estudo trata-se de uma revisão sistemática de literatura, extraindo 620 artigos da Web of Science (WoS). Os resultados foram gerados através da própria plataforma WoS e, complementarmente, pelo software VOSviewer para análises de rede.
Main results
Most publications appeared in 2020, with the United States and India leading. SDG 9 was most cited. Prahalad is the top-cited author, and emerging terms like frugal innovation, gender, and financial inclusion also feature prominently in recent studies.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
This study maps the evolution of Base of the Pyramid approaches (BoP 1.0–3.0) and their links to innovation. It identifies a literature gap on frugal innovation and entrepreneurship in the BoP and demonstrates an integrated WoS and VOSviewer methodological analysis.
Social / management contributions
The study expands the discussion on frugal innovation and entrepreneurship at the base of the pyramid. It highlights the potential of frugal innovation to transform non-consumers into consumers, promoting socioeconomic inclusion in emerging markets through entrepreneurs from the BoP and multinationals.
