Study goals
To understand how the research on innovation intermediaries of technology transfer has situated the Innovation Intermediaries (IIs) over the years.
Relevance / originality
Together, the literature analyzed in this study affirms the vital mediating role of IIs, while also highlighting significant variability in their effectiveness and underlying mechanisms across different industries, governance regimes, and firm capabilities.
Methodology / approach
This study was developed from the perspective of a systematic literature review (SLR), adopting the Scientific Procedures and Rationales for Systematic Literature Reviews protocol (SPAR-4-SLR protocol). From an initial search in Scopus and WOS, we analyzed 31 articles from 2008 to 2025.
Main results
Our key findings show five most prominent performance types of IIs under investigation in the literature, grouped in four clusters: RTOs; Meta-organizations; Centers of Excellence; and Other types of innovation intermediaries.
Theoretical / methodological contributions
IIs function as boundary spanners, harmonizing the often‐divergent priorities of universities, firms, and policymakers to smooth the path for technology transfer. This deepens the understanding of how IIs has been investigated, identifying emerging themes in this field.
Social / management contributions
There were several reflections for entrepreneurs, researchers and practitioners on the different performances that the IIs can interplay on innovation intermediation in the technology transfer process.
